Trimester 1:
Non-Fiction Piece #1 "The Weather of Distance"
I choose this piece as one of my top 3 annotations because looking back, I felt that I showed many specific skills. For this assignment, we were supposed to look for the purpose which I said was that the author wanted to show the feeling of grief through the setting of weather and nature. Along with this, I felt that I did very well in terms of limiting my annotations, because I was able to pick out the parts that I felt were most important, and the parts that I felt showed the most about the author. Through this writing, I learned how important the mood or emotion of a piece is, especially when trying to make the reader relate to your piece. |
Non-Fiction Piece #2 "Sanctuary of School"
This is one of my best annotations, because I not only wrote about the purpose and mood, but I looked at how the different literary techniques worked together to get the author's point across. Through this essay, I examined how the author blended personal experiences, with her claims to persuade the reader that public schools are a very important part of society and the lives of children. Along with this, my annotations showed my growing knowledge on how an author can create ethos even without using statistics and data. I annotated where she was able to use memories to show to the reader how she felt during certain experiences, which in my opinion, helped the piece and message it was conveying resonate with me. |
Non-Fiction Piece #3 "There Are Three Types of Failure, but Only One You Should Actually Feel Bad About"
Trimester 2:
Non-Fiction #1-"Walter Scott's Death Should End Public's Denial of Police Victimization of Blacks"
Non-Fiction #2-Friday Literary Analysis
Non-Fiction #3-"The Fear We All Live With"
|
This is one of my top three annotations because I was able to zoom in on two the most important aspects of nonfiction writing. While annotating this article, I looked at the intended audience as well as how the author established ethos, which are both things that I worked on through my personal pieces of writing. Specifically, my annotations of this showed my growth in understanding the intended audience. As I was reading this piece, I learned how to pinpoint how literary techniques show who the author is writing to, which helped me decide who my intended audience was for my expository essay. In addition to these, another way that my annotations showed my skills as a reader was how I looked not only at the literary techniques, but the structure of the essay as well. I explained how the author broke up her essay to make it more understandable for the reader, which is something I used in my mastery expository essay. I chose this as one of my best 10B annotations because I felt that when annotating this article, I looked more for evidence techniques which was something new that I learned in this class. In addition, many times I find that my annotations are all pretty similar in terms of what I look for, but this one blended choices by the author, techniques, and my thoughts on things that the author said or did. Also, the whole assignment that included this essay really taught me about different perspectives and how to look at the evidence used and the potential bias which I found really helpful when writing my own argumentative essay. I chose this as one of my best reflections because it was very different from a lot of the other annotations that we did, and I also felt that it was very thoughtful in terms of what I reflected on. For this annotation, I annotated a section from a book I was reading, and mainly looked at the perspectives and the purpose. This book had 2 perspectives, which both were from very different socioeconomic statuses and families. In this reflection, I was able to discus how the author incorporated the idea that you can't let your wealth define who you are as a person or how you interact with others, which I think showed a deeper level of reflection than the other annotations that I did. I chose this annotation because I thought that I did well with analyzing the ethos, pathos, and logos that was used in this piece. Most of the other articles that I annotated I mainly focused on the structural moves such as arguments, and I sometimes looked at ethos. In this article, I thought that it was very helpful for me to see how the author was able to blend ethos, pathos, and logos to create one strong argument on a topic that is very relevant in society right now. In addition, my annotations were very thoughtful for this article, because I care deeply about the issue of gun violence that was described throughout this piece. |
